DCS SAM
Calculator
Surface-to-air threat visualiser for DCS World. 40 systems included with threat ring, altitude envelope and Pk estimate based on target range and altitude.
What it is
The DCS SAM Calculator is a browser-based tool to analyse the surface-to-air threats present in DCS World. It lets you visualise the threat ring and altitude envelope of 40 SAM systems, understand the engagement zone as a function of target range and altitude, and get an operational Pk estimate. It runs entirely in the browser with no external servers.
Why it was created
In DCS World, threat awareness is essential for survival. Understanding where an SA-6’s vertical coverage ends, at what distance you enter a Patriot’s kill zone, or how long an SA-2 stays powered before becoming a ballistic target is not immediate from raw data. The SAM Calculator turns this information into an immediate tactical visualisation, useful for briefings, SEAD/DEAD route planning and post-flight analysis.
Systems included
40 systems split by category:
IADS (long range): SA-2 Guideline, SA-3 Neva, SA-5 Gammon, S-300PS, S-300V, HAWK, Patriot PAC-3, HQ-16
SHORAD (short-to-medium range): SA-6 Gainful, SA-8 Gecko, SA-11 Buk, Buk-M2, SA-15 Tor, SA-15B Tor-M2, Pantsir-S1, Roland, Rapier, HQ-7B, Crotale
MANPAD: SA-9 Gaskin, SA-13 Gopher, SA-18 Igla, SA-19 Tunguska, Stinger, Mistral, Chaparral
AAA: Shilka ZSU-23-4, Gepard, ZSU-57-2
Naval: Sea Dart, S-300F, HHQ-9, SM-2MR, SM-2ER, SM-6, RIM-116 RAM, Seawolf, Sea Cat
Visualisations
Threat ring (top-down view):
- Maximum range dashed (high altitude)
- Effective range as a solid line
- Motor burnout zone in orange (active propulsion), coast zone in blue
- Inner dead zone in dashed red
- Colour legend for systems with burnout data
Altitude envelope (side view):
- The system’s vertical coverage with a coloured engagement zone
- X axis distance, Y axis altitude in thousands of feet
- Target position overlaid in real time
Evaluation parameters
- Range — slider that adapts to the selected system’s range
- Target altitude — from 0 to over 50,000 ft with display on the envelope
- Units — km/NM toggle for both visualisations
Pk estimate
The Pk panel combines maximum range, target altitude and distance to produce an operational estimate with a status message: out of range, peripheral zone, optimal engagement zone, dead zone. The system also shows the corresponding RWR code (or “no spike” for pure IR systems) and the maximum G value.
Access
